Why a North American Website Should Be More Than an English Translation of a Chinese Website
North Digital Co.
English Version
Why a North American Website Should Be More Than an English Translation of a Chinese Website
Translation makes information readable in another language, but it does not automatically make a website effective for a new market. Localization connects content, design and business communication. The aim is to help North American buyers evaluate your offer in a familiar way, without asking them to work around a structure built for a different audience.
Different audiences need different priorities
Neither Chinese nor North American websites follow a single universal style. However, visitors unfamiliar with the business need an early explanation of the offer, its audience and the next step.
If the current homepage focuses on news, awards and company history, those materials may work better on an About page. Give products, services, applications and contact routes clear places in navigation. Make the change because it helps the intended buyer, not because one market’s design is inherently better.
Correct English is not the same as effective business English
A sentence about “quality first” may be grammatically correct while giving a buyer very little useful information. Explain the products, materials, documentation and specifications needed for a request.
Extract concrete facts from business records before writing clear English. Review terminology, units and technical commitments with someone who understands the work. Particular care is needed around dimensions and certification scope. International positioning does not require complicated language; it requires an understandable and accurate offer.
Give buyers evidence they can evaluate
In a B2B context, capability statements become more useful when supported by specific information. Specifications, real processes, approved project images and clear service boundaries provide a basis for procurement discussions.
If no public case study is available, describe the working method and deliverables instead of inventing a customer story. Use logos only with permission, and show certifications within their actual scope. The objective is to help buyers evaluate fit, rather than simply creating an impression of scale.
Localize imagery as well as text
Posters filled with Chinese text and unreadable product labels can create unnecessary friction. Use authorized images of real products, facilities or work, while keeping important specifications in readable page text.
Localization does not require replacing every picture with a North American landscape. A manufacturer can honestly show its factory in China. Review compression, alternative text and mobile cropping so visitors can understand the offer without relying on text embedded in an image.
Design calls to action around the actual conversation
Calls to action can be more specific than repeating “Contact us.” Depending on the page, invite a buyer to send specifications, discuss a scope or request an initial consultation.
Ask only for information needed to begin the conversation, and make sure the submission route works. Keep business email easy to find. WeChat can remain an additional channel, but an unfamiliar visitor should not have to install an application just to ask about a product or service.
Research search language rather than translating keywords
A Chinese product term may have several English equivalents, and buyers may use language different from internal company terminology. Understand the application, buyer role and industry vocabulary before naming pages.
A machine may be described by product type, use case or purchasing purpose. Research which descriptions fit the offer rather than assuming that a translated phrase has demand. Our SEO service and starting guide focus on connecting business information with customer questions.
Make contact information usable across markets
Clearly show a working email, service area and communication options. If a real phone number or business schedule is available, include the country code and time zone. Publish only an address that the business can legitimately use.
Domain-based email connects correspondence with the website identity. Explain which specifications, drawings or background information help the team respond. This can reduce repeated clarification and make communication across time zones more organized.
Localization should preserve the truth about the business
A Chinese company can be transparent about where its team, production and services are based, while explaining how it serves North American customers. Localization should clarify those facts, not imply a Canadian or US entity that does not exist.
Update the site when a real subsidiary or local service team becomes available. Keep business facts consistent across languages. Google’s multilingual site documentation provides technical context, while the company remains responsible for accurate market-facing information.
North Digital Co.’s perspective
Start with the reasons a customer visits, then organize the pages accordingly. We recommend planning website design, English content and search foundations together, using real business materials for review.
